Jeff Civillico: Comedy in Action

jcivillico 4

Jeff Civillico can ride a unicycle and juggle at the same time, but that's not all that makes him entertaining. It's his enthusiastic interaction with the crowd and quirky mannerisms that whip audiences into a comedic frenzy at his afternoon show at The Quad. His innovative method of entertainment has been branded "comedy in action."

"You know you're a big deal in Vegas when you do your own introduction," says Civillico at the start of the show.

Audience interaction is a big part of Civillico's act. He starts the show by asking for an item from the crowd. He gets a man in the audience to hand him his baseball cap. Then Civillico balances it on his head. From there, he moves on to balancing a chair that someone hands him from the audience. Next it's a 10-foot ladder that he gets from back stage and balances on his chin. By this time you're thinking, "This guy must be crazy."

With odd signature moves like his high side kick followed by an exaggerated wedgie pull, Civillico is the definition of zany, and that's what makes him entertaining. If you're that taken by Civillico's on-stage idiosyncrasies, they're emblazoned on a T-shirt that you can purchase after the show.A multifaceted entertainer, Civillico's comedy show is sure to enliven anyone's afternoon. Bringing laughter and moments of awe to audiences is all in a day's work for Civillico. His energy is boundless just like his ability to entertain.

The Broadway Rat Pack

 Broadwayrat 5

People might immediately think Elvis when it comes to Las Vegas, but before The King, the city jived to the tune of four entertainers who won over audiences with their cool musical stylings and playful stage demeanor.

During the 1960s, the Rat Pack - Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., Joey Bishop and Dean Martin brought fame and recognition to the city as both an entertainment capital and gambling destination during their run inside the Copa Room at the Sands. Today, audiences can relive the revelry and timeless music of the Rat Pack era in the show The Rat Pack is Back at Tuscany Suites.

"What happens in Vegas all started with the Rat Pack," said the show's producer Dick Feeney. "The real legend of Vegas - the cool cats, the drinking, the partying, the gambling, they epitomized it, and people still look at those days with fond memories."

The Rat Pack is Back! starts with a custodian mopping the stage and reminiscing about working at the Sands and hanging out with Frank and the guys.

Deftones

deftones21

Deftones' roots stem from the friendship of three friends: Chino Moreno, Stephen Carpenter and Abe Cunningham, all of whom grew up in Sacramento, California, as skateboarding and music fanatics. The trio started jamming together in the late '80s alongside other musicians, including the late bassist Chi Cheng. After honing their sound with live gigs, Deftones ended up signing a major record deal in 1994 with Madonna's Maverick Records and released their debut album, Adrenaline, the following year.

The group followed this up with 1997's Around the Fur, which cemented Deftones as a part of the burgeoning nu-metal movement. Then, starting with 2000's critically acclaimed White Pony, the band became known for boundary-stretching metal that drew on atmospheric textures and heavy riffs. White Pony spawned the alternative hit "Change (In the House of Flies)" and the song "Elite," the latter winning the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance. Other notable songs followed, including "Minerva" (from 2003's self-titled album) and the title track of 2010's Diamond Eyes. Deftones continue to be a formidable touring and recording machine, and released Gore in 2016.

Crazy Girls

crazygirls2

With its new move to residency at the Planet Hollywood Casino Resort, Crazy Girls is clearly a permanent fixture on the Las Vegas Strip. The ultra-sexy show has entertained millions of audience members, including famous faces like Nicolas Cage, Magic Johnson, Robert DeNiro, Joe Pesci and Tom Jones.

MSNBC calls the the bronze Vegas-Strip tribute statue one of the "World's Top 10 Good Luck Monuments." The story of how this image became iconic is filled with controversy that started in 1994 when Las Vegas city officials sought to persuade the Riviera Hotel and Casino, the previous home of Crazy Girls, to take down a billboard near City Hall. The show refused on the grounds that taking down the advertisement would infringe upon the girls’ First Amendment rights. The bronze statue depicting the now internationally famous image was erected years later as a tribute to the Girls' successful fight; it has become an international symbol of good luck, and thousands of visitors visit the statue each year to rub the trademark bare bronze derrieres. Once again in 1999, Republican state Senator Bill O'Donnell declared the sexy ad showing the Crazy Girls' bare backsides too racy... pushing to remove ads from Las Vegas taxicabs. The Crazy Girls fought back and prevailed once again; the ads can still be seen on Vegas taxicabs today. The Crazy Girls' controversies didn't start there, however. Years earlier, Crazy Girls shocked Las Vegas by performing without tights - a testament not only to the show's willingness to make headlines, but also to the show's high standards for the athleticism and sexiness of its performers. With nearly everything laid bare, there was no question which show had the hottest girls in town.Las Vegas' most sizzling topless show still pushes the envelope night after night. Brand new routines are introduced that feature the scintillating professionally trained dancers performing world renowned choreography, a nod to its classic floor-show roots. Routines range from topless contemporary boot-stomping pole dance numbers to bawdy, burlesque classics. $500,000 in dazzling costumes adorn each girl, from Parisian-influenced topless outfits to black leather and spiked heels, but one thing is constant - the G-strings that accentuate the Girls' trademark derrieres. The always controversial and sexy Crazy Girls is a must-see show now only at Planet Hollywood.

Elton John: The Million Dollar Piano

eltonjohn 4

The Rocket Man has returned. Singer, songwriter and musician Elton John is back at Caesars Palace for a three-year residency, his second as a Caesars headliner.

"It's great to be back here at the Colosseum - it's a magic place," said Elton on the opening night of his new show. "When I was here last, Celine had one child and now she has three. Cher's daughter became a man, Rod Stewart is now Benico del Toro's father-in-law and I became a dad, which is probably the least likely of all those scenarios," he jokes, regarding the major changes that have happened to Caesars headliners since he completed a five-year stint at the Colosseum in 2009.

Elton kicks off his new show, The Million Dollar Piano, with "The Bitch is Back," crowd pleaser "Bennie and the Jets" and what Elton calls one of his favorite songs, "Rocket Man."

The focal point of the stage when Elton is singing is, of course, the piano and Elton introduces it as "the other star of my show."

The show's namesake instrument, created by Elton and Yamaha, is an engineering marvel that took nearly four years to make and weighs 3,200 pounds.

The piano features more than 68 LED video screens on the side of it, which create the perfect accompaniment to Elton's greatest hits, displaying imagery that complements the songs and sometimes mirroring what's being projected on the mammoth screen behind the Colosseum stage.

Elton said he has five pianos all over the world with different names and this one is called Blossom after jazz singer and pianist Blossom Dearie. The piano is so high-tech that Elton jokes it has a microwave and an aquarium under its glass top. "The only thing it doesn't do is barbecue," he said.

Besides the eye-catching piano, the rest of Elton's show is visually stunning as well. The set features large golden scrolls decorated with piano keys on either side of the stage, a huge golden dog standing guard on one side, large golden Roman-inspired columns and rocket ships flying through the air. The designer, Mark Fisher, is known for his design of Pink Floyd's "The Wall" and his work designing the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Although there's a lot to look at, the show is all about the Elton's award-winning music. He sings the big hits that everyone wants to hear including "Tiny Dancer," "I'm Still Standing" and "Levon." Elton is backed by a five-piece band, two cellists (who appear on several numbers) and four female background singers including Rose Stone from Sly and the Family Stone and her daughter, Lisa Stone.

He's the Merchant of Venom, the King of the Insult -- a comedian whose acid tongue makes audiences squirm. Don Rickles is never without a quick-witted barb. His insult comedy makes fun of all people and walks of life. The comedian, whose earliest ambition was to become a dramatic actor, got his start in the boroughs of Manhattan. His early acts mixed stand-up with his impressions of famous actors of the day, which included Humphrey Bogart, James Cagney and Cary Grant. It was one fateful night, however, that Rickles, who was performing in a strip club, unleashed all his frustrations at a group of rowdy sailors, leaving a string of insults in his wake. The crowd ate it up, and Rickles had found his niche. Throughout his career Rickles has continued to perform as a stand-up comedian, amusing audiences with his signature biting wit. His remarks are offensive, but the end result is always laughter from the crowd.
