Shinedown

shinedown21

What seems to qualify as “rock music” has changed a bit over the years. But Shinedown is here to remind us what the phrase really means when they hit the Vegas stage.

Like we said, rock music comes in many forms, but this band likes to rock the opposite of how we like our math tests: hard. Shinedown have placed 11 number one singles on the Billboard Rock chart, including “45,” “Sound of Sadness” and Simple Man.”

So how do you define “rock music?” Shinedown would probably define it as “success.” Or getting punched in the mouth. Depending on the day, we suppose. Check out Shinedown at the Pearl inside the Palms Resort on August 12, 2020.

Aaron Lewis

alewis1

If you're a country music fan, you probably know Aaron Lewis as the breakout star who rode onto the ranch with his hit "Country Boy" in 2011. The EP even reached number one on the Billboard Country Albums Chart. If you're not a Country fan, you probably know him as the frontman from Staind who gave every acoustic rocker a new cover to learn with their 2001 hit "It's Been a While." You may also know him as the guy who stopped a show at Rockfest earlier this year to vocally slap down some crowd members who were groping a young woman in the audience.

Beyond his musical career, and when he's not standing up for women in mosh pits, Lewis, along with his wife Vanessa, has founded the It Takes a Community Foundation. The organization is dedicated to bringing new life and revitalization to rural communities in New England by empowering and supporting community leaders and groups within the area.

Steven Wright

stevenwright21

Usually when you imagine a monotone person, you get flashbacks of that horrible middle school teacher you never liked. But when you add that quality to a stand-up comic like Steven Wright at The Orleans Hotel & Casino, it’s pure gold.

If you don’t believe us, here’s a roll call on how successful he is. Wright has appeared as a host on "Saturday Night Live" and made appearances on talk shows hosted by Johnny Carson, Jay Leno, Craig Ferguson and David Letterman.

In 2007, he released a follow-up to the successful album "I Have a Pony" titled "I Still Have a Pony," which was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Comedy Album. In 2008, he became the first inductee into the Boston Comedy Hall of Fame. Wright has also been named the No. 23 comedian on Comedy Central's list of the 100 greatest stand-up comedians of all time.

He’s got the Midas touch, not like that fake pawn shop stuff that will leave you with a green ring around your neck. So, purchase your tickets to see Steven Wright at the Orleans Showroom today.

Men of Sapphire

menofsapphire20

If you're celebrating a birthday, a bachelorette party or just want to have some naughty fun, head to Men of Sapphire.

Ladies, enjoy the male eye candy as each performer takes his turn on stage. If you're lucky, you'll get pulled up on stage for an impromptu up-close-and-personal performance.

Before the show starts, the host of the show (also a dancer) keeps the crowd of screaming girls excited and entertained.

When the show starts, the gentlemen walk around the audience getting the crowd pumped up. Then lights flash and the opening number is the only number where four performers take the stage at once. With black hooded sweatshirts and baggy jeans on, the boys jump around the stage with moves Marky Mark (and his Funky Bunch) would approve of.

But Men of Sapphire isn't your typical male review where the dancers (for the most part) stay on stage and perform to choreographed routines.

After the opening act, each dancer takes his turn on stage, representing some popular fantasies. While we were there, the marine handled his rifle with ease and a champion hip-hop dancer took the stage with Chris Brown-like dance moves.

Ladies are encouraged to submit a piece of paper to the DJ volunteering the bachelorette or birthday girl in their party for a stage dance or a private dance for a little extra cash and memorable entertainment. Ladies are also encouraged to crowd around the stage where a guy will give you a little extra attention — for a dollar.

There is no solid ending to Men of Sapphire. Instead, the show turns into a male strip club in the showroom with private lap dances, stage dances and plenty of men walking around.

Defending the Caveman

 Defending the Caveman

{youtube}{youtube}

Understanding the opposite sex may never be easy, but "Defending the Caveman" breaks it all down for you. This hilarious one-man comedy, created by comedian/writer Rob Becker, attempts to debunk the age old myth that men are all jerks.

"Defending the Caveman" is the longest-running solo play in Broadway history. It has been seen in 45 different countries and translated into 30 different languages.

"Instead of looking at men as a--holes, why don't we just look at them as having a different culture?" asks the narrator at the beginning of the show. Then he starts to explain how many of the same characteristics that were conveyed by cavemen are still very apparent in modern day behaviors of men and women and that understanding this is the key to also understanding the opposite sex.

Prehistoric-looking props and lighting and sound techniques are used to enhance the performance. The narrator's casual stage presence and typical jeans and T-shirt ensemble give him the every-man look that all guys can relate to.

Women like to shop because they are innate gatherers, the narrator says. Cavewomen were in charge of gathering food and knowing what colors to look for as an indication that certain things were ripe and ready for the picking. This same concept explains why women like to shop and gather more clothes when the seasons change, even if their closet is already full.

As the narrator shares more instances from his life, couples in the audience laugh and nudge each other, acknowledging that they relate to his experiences. Single people in the audience find the show equally amusing and also enlightening on how to better interpret the opposite sex on their next date. The show's typical audience includes everyone from young people visiting for a wild weekend to people celebrating bachelorette parties, anniversaries or just a good time in Vegas.

While this show is scripted, the narrator refers to the audience for inspiration and to help dictate each performance.

John Prine

jprine1

Grammy-winning songwriter John Prine returns to Las Vegas for the first time since 1999 to entertain audiences at The Pearl in the Palms Casino Resort with four decades of songs.

Prine has long been considered a songwriter's songwriter. His talent is well recognized by the recording artists who have performed his songs including Johnny Cash, Bonnie Raitt, the Everly Brothers, John Denver, Kris Kristofferson, Carly Simon, Ben Harper, Joan Baez and many others. In 2005 he was nationally recognized for his talent when he became the first singer / songwriter to read and perform at the Library of Congress. That same year the American Music Awards named him Artist of the Year.

Bob Dylan told The Huffington Post in 2009 that Prine was one of his favorite songwriters, stating: "Prine's stuff is pure Proustian existentialism. Midwestern mindtrips to the nth degree. And he writes beautiful songs."

Long before the awards and accolades, the concerts and the albums, Prine trudged through snow in the cold Chicago winters delivering mail. He began to sing at open mic evenings at the Fifth Peg on Armitage Avenue in Chicago. It was there he would receive his first review from none other than Chicago Sun-Times movie critic Roger Ebert, who called him a great songwriter.

Prine became a central figure in the Chicago folk revival along with Steve Goodman, Bonnie Koloc, Jim Post and Fred Holstein. In 1971, Prine released his self-titled debut album. From there, Prine has continual released albums through the '70s, '80s, '90s and into the new millennium.

In October of 2011, Prine released "The Singing Mailman Delivers." This two-disc archival release features the earliest studio and live recordings from Prine dating back to 1970, one year before his prolific debut album.

Though his own commercial success may be considered small compared to other recording artists, Prine's influence on folk, country and rock music through his songwriting is immense.

Louie Anderson Live

landerson 3

Emmy Award-winning comic Louie Anderson is the Plaza's resident comedian in downtown Las Vegas.

Anderson recently finished a run with the ABC celebrity diving show, “Splash.” Even as he launched himself off platforms and springboards, he had comedy on his mind.

“Diving is a lot like stand-up,” he said. “You can’t go back once you’re up there. There’s only a shame walk. I gotta dive into the audience or dive into the pool.”

But Anderson’s career has been anything but a flop.

He made his national TV debut on “The Tonight Show” in 1984 and since then has brought audiences to tears of laughter with his appearances on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno,” “The Late Show with David Letterman,” “The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson,” “Comic Relief” and specials on HBO and Showtime. He hosted "Family Feud" for a time, and most recently, he starred in his own CMT stand-up special, “Big Baby Boomer.”

Anderson has guest starred in sitcoms and TV dramas and was featured in the films, “Coming to America,” opposite Eddie Murphy, and in the comedy classic, “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.”

With his autobiographical animated series, “Life with Louie,” Anderson became the only three-time recipient of the Humanitas Prize for writing on a children’s series.

Among Anderson’s best-selling books, “Dear Dad – Letters From An Adult Child,” is a collection of hilarious and touching notes from Anderson to his late father. “Goodbye, Jumbo … Hello Cruel World” is a self-help book for those with self esteem struggles. He recently released, “The F Word: How to Survive Your Family.”

Michael Pergolini, general manager of the Plaza Hotel & Casino, said that Anderson is a perfect fit for the venue.

“We thought it was a great partnership to have a comedy legend like Louie headline the Plaza’s legendary showroom that has been the home to many stars over the years,” Pergolini said. “It’s great to have Louie here at the Plaza to entertain our guests and broaden the entertainment options downtown.”

Recycled Percussion

 rpercussion 1

Part rock concert and part interactive experience, this show is a riotous blend of music and comedy. Before any of the performers hit the stage, theshowroom is filled with loud rock 'n' roll music and the sound of audience members banging on the instruments given to them before entering the theater.

The curtain rises and the four members of Recycled Percussion make their grand entrance, lowered over the stage while sitting on a vertical platform with their backs parallel to the floor and playing the drums. Except they aren't drums, instead Recycled Percussion has made a name for themselves by creating music out of pieces of recycled trash, tin, buckets, power tools and other items. The audience also gets to experience how the group's raucous junk rock is created.

Upon entering the showroom everyone is given a set of drumsticks and other item that they'll use during the show. A video introduction explains everything once the show starts. Each item has a colored dot on it that represents your team leader and when you are supposed to bang your instrument. As the band performs, rock videos of songs are played on a huge screen hanging over the stage. When you see your colored dot, you hit your instrument. Anyone familiar with Rock Band or Guitar Hero will have no problem playing along, but even if you don't know those games the basic drum beats are easy to follow.
