Formed in 1985 by Vince Clarke, formerly of Depeche Mode fame, and vocalist Andy Bell, Erasure is one of the most successful and long running acts in British pop. The band released their first album, "Wonderland," in 1986 and the record's follow up, "Sometimes," shortly after, which launched a string of successful singles.
Erasure hit fame in the U.S. in 1988 with the single "Chains of Love" from the album "The Innocents" and began to grow their dedicated fan base outside of their native Britain. The single, "A Little Respect," was also a hit with American fans and reached No.14 on the charts. More studio releases followed as the band's cult following continued to grow. In 1992, Erasure released "Pop! The First 20 Hits," a compilation of the band's top singles. In 1994, "I Say I Say I Say" was released marking the group's fifth studio album. "I Say I Say I Say" featured the single "Always," which was the first hit for Erasure in the U.S. since their breakout in 1988. They followed up with a self-titled release in 1995 and the album "Cowboy" in 1997.
Additional releases including, live albums, cover albums and others followed, and in 2009 they released "Total Pop! - The First 40 Hits," which contained not just their hits, but a remix of hit single "Always" by producer Jeremy Wheatley. In 2011 Erasure released "Tomorrow's World" which was followed in 2013 with the Christmas album "Snow Globe."
"The Violet Flame," recorded in New York and London and produced by Richard X, will be released on Sept. 23, 2014 and is the band’s 16th studio album.
From 1986 to 2007, Erasure had 24 consecutive Top 40 hits in the United Kingdom and 3 Top 20 hits in the U.S. (on the Billboard Hot 100): "A Little Respect" "Chains of Love" and "Always." The English synth-pop duo has enjoyed their greatest popularity in the UK, Europe and South America. To date, they have sold more than 25 million albums.
