Riviera Comedy Club

rivieracomedy 3

A stomping ground for some of the nation's hottest comedians, the Riviera Comedy Club also hosts bright up-and-comers at its 350-seat venue.

The club's roster alternates between a format of three comedians, in which one is a headliner, or one of four lesser-known comedians.

Tom Simmons, a frequent visitor to the Riviera, was the emcee the night we attended. A gifted comedian, Simmons struck on topics in the forefront of his guests' minds - Mike Tyson and terrorism among them.

Simmons proposed taking care of two problems at once by allowing Tyson into Afghanistan. "I like to see him (Tyson) fight, but I don"t think he should be a member of society," said Simmons. "Lets put him with Osama - he can rape and bite as much as he likes."

Oakland comic Daniel Dugar, who ranted about his wife's less-than-ladylike habits, and Larry Reeb, or "Uncle Lar" as he's affectionately known, had the crowd howling with their twisted takes on the world. Reeb let loose with a number of "tips" (such as preparing kids for bad weather by "wrapping them in tin foil and kicking them into the rain") for the crowd and summed up life with one line "It's a sick world and I'm a happy guy."

Modeled after a basement-style Manhattan club, the Riviera venue features rows of tables that run from the stage to the exit, with tables for smaller parties closest to the front. The semicircular stage provides plenty of room for the comedians to perform their shtick, with only a microphone illuminated by a spotlight.

The club first came to the Riviera in 1987 as the Improv, and changed to its present name in 1995.

This show has a group of reoccurring comedic headliners that perform along with the and special-guest headliners.

Showstoppers

showstoppers 2

It's all hits and no misses as Steve Wynn cherry picks the greatest Broadway hits to create "ShowStoppers," a 90-minute show highlighting some of America's favorite show numbers.

Broadway's rock star composers and lyricists are all represented here with music from Cole Porter, Rodgers & Hammerstein, Marvin Hamlisch and more as numbers from more than 10 musicals are presented in their full glory.

The hits being performed feel like who's who of Tony Award winners seeing that the show's catalogue of songs has earned 43 Tony Awards and countless number of various other recognitions.

"ShowStoppers" features 18 iconic songs like "All That Jazz" from "Chicago," "Cabaret" from "Cabaret," "Everything's Coming Up Roses" from "Gypsy" and many more that you've probably belted out in the shower.

But perhaps more elaborate than your shower, Wynn is sparing no expense to create a show that expresses the very best of live Broadway entertainment with a remarkable cast of 35 singers and dancers all backed by an on-stage, 31-piece orchestra, as well as exceptional costume and set designs that evoke an unparalleled “Razzle Dazzle” element.

"ShowStoppers" was inspired by Wynn's birthday party for his wife, Andrea. At that celebration, Broadway stars Rachel York and Hugh Jackman performed hit songs backed by dancers and an orchestra. That experience ignited a passion in Wynn to bring a similar show to his Encore Theater at Wynn Las Vegas.

"These show stopping numbers, they seem to have a power of their own," said Steve Wynn, chairman and CEO of Wynn Resorts. "The reason they're showstoppers is that they touch some element of human nature and human emotion that seems to resonate generation after generation."

To deliver an epic night of showstoppers in "ShowStoppers," Wynn has recruited an award-winning creative team including director Phil McKinley, recently with Broadway's "Spiderman: Turn off the Dark;" choreographer and three-time Emmy Award-winner Marguerite Derricks; costume designer Suzy Benzinger, the head costume designer for the Oscar award-winning film "Blue Jasmine;" and Emmy Award-winning musical director David Loeb.

And implementing the behind-the-scenes talent are the singers, dancers and musicians who captivate the audience with their entrancing execution of some of Broadway’s most notable tunes.

All selected from esteemed backgrounds in their field, leading the male singers include Randal Keith, David Burnham and Andrew Ragone. Keith is a veteran Las Vegas performer having played three lead roles in "Phantom -- The Las Vegas Spectacular" and also appeared in "Monty Python's Spamalot" at the Encore Theater. Ragone is a fellow "Phantom" performer, having played Raoul in the Vegas show. And Burnham has earned accolades as Fabrizio in the national tour of "The Light in the Piazza." In addition to having played the role of Fiyero in "Wicked" on Broadway.

Leading the female performers, Kerry O'Malley, Lauren Molina and Lindsay Roginski have all also had an impressive run in the entertainment world prior to “ShowStoppers.” O'Malley has performed in film ("Annabelle," "Earth to Echo," "Terminator: Genesis") and on TV ("Boardwalk Empire" and "Irving Berlin's White Christmas"), while Nolina starred as Johanna in "Sweeney Todd" on Broadway and fellow Broadwayite Roginski starred as Roxie Hart in "Chicago" and as Lola in "Damn Yankees."

A single Broadway showstopper is so bold that it is rare if there is more than one of these show-stopping numbers is in one performance -- just imagine the incredible energy of watching (and dancing along to!) 18 in a row.

KA

 ka21

ka22

ka23

Truth is, there’s a Cirque du Soleil production for just about every personality, mood and interest out there. And “KA,” is for the action-loving, adventure-seeking show goers that can appreciate an age-old story of good versus evil. The storyline illustrates the journey of a brother and sister twin duo that becomes separated during a siege of their Far Eastern palace by evil warriors. Yep, this is a royal battle, y’all and they’ve pulled out all the stops.

The entire theater is designed to fit the theme so no matter where your gaze takes you, you’ll be looking at the set. But you’re really gonna love this: the stage is made up of two massive moving platforms that not only float, but turn completely vertical. Did you hear that? That was the sound of our minds being blown. And just wait until you see the suspended fight scenes.

Also, while it’s insanely cool, not all the stunts are done in the air. The Wheel of Death, for example (ohmagah can you believe they have a Wheel of Death?), is positioned firmly on the ground while the daredevil performer flings himself into dangerous heights, where one misstep could lead to his demise. A story of intense battle, and a question of triumph or defeat to the very end, KA is entertainment on an entirely new level. Forreal.

Le Reve: The Dream

lereve21

lereve22

Leave reality behind and experience the fantastical world of Le Rêve, created by Franco Dragone, at Wynn. French for the dream, Le Rêve, depicts a colorful aquatic wonderland of beautiful and mystifying characters. The experience starts when you first enter the theater and realize that this is not your typical showroom. The circular 1608-seat theater is situated around a pool that is 68-and-a-half-feet in diameter with the furthest seat only 42 feet from the water. The 27-foot-deep pool is kept at a comfortable 89 degrees Fahrenheit.  Not only does the in-the-round theater put guests at a unique vantage point, but it also makes them feel like they are part of the show as there is no clear line between the audience and the stage. Gymnasts, aerialists and synchronized swimmers appear from every angle, at times ascending from the water, descending from the high arched ceiling or running through the theater and alongside the audience. If you are seated by an aisle, you never know when you are going to look to your side and see a masked face or other curious character staring right back at you.

Le Rêve has a loosely woven storyline that begins with a woman and man dancing and then saying goodnight and goodbye to each other. The man departs the stage, and the woman lies down to rest on a bed. Together the woman and the bed slowly disappear underwater, signifying that her spectacular dream is about to begin.

Men of Sapphire

menofsapphire20

If you're celebrating a birthday, a bachelorette party or just want to have some naughty fun, head to Men of Sapphire.

Ladies, enjoy the male eye candy as each performer takes his turn on stage. If you're lucky, you'll get pulled up on stage for an impromptu up-close-and-personal performance.

Before the show starts, the host of the show (also a dancer) keeps the crowd of screaming girls excited and entertained.

When the show starts, the gentlemen walk around the audience getting the crowd pumped up. Then lights flash and the opening number is the only number where four performers take the stage at once. With black hooded sweatshirts and baggy jeans on, the boys jump around the stage with moves Marky Mark (and his Funky Bunch) would approve of.

But Men of Sapphire isn't your typical male review where the dancers (for the most part) stay on stage and perform to choreographed routines.

After the opening act, each dancer takes his turn on stage, representing some popular fantasies. While we were there, the marine handled his rifle with ease and a champion hip-hop dancer took the stage with Chris Brown-like dance moves.

Ladies are encouraged to submit a piece of paper to the DJ volunteering the bachelorette or birthday girl in their party for a stage dance or a private dance for a little extra cash and memorable entertainment. Ladies are also encouraged to crowd around the stage where a guy will give you a little extra attention — for a dollar.

There is no solid ending to Men of Sapphire. Instead, the show turns into a male strip club in the showroom with private lap dances, stage dances and plenty of men walking around.

"O"

ocirque21

Weaving a tapestry of artistry, surrealism and theatrical romance, 'O' pays tribute to the beauty of theatre. Inspired by the concept of infinity and the elegance of water, world-class acrobats, synchronized swimmers and divers create a breathtaking experience. Only at Bellagio, Las Vegas.

"O," a play on the French word for water, is a stunning aquatic masterpiece that explores a world of fantasy beyond your wildest imagination conveyed through the amazing performances of world class acrobats, synchronized swimmers, divers and an array of other characters in, on and around a 1.5-million gallon pool.

First, you’ll laugh at a silly spectacle of two clowns attempting to stay dry under the protection of a tattered umbrella as they weave their way through the audience with an oversized inner tube for a little pre-show entertainment. Once the clowns make their way backstage and the lights dim, you will suddenly find yourself surrendering into a fantastical world of wonderment as the show’s Comets (a group of the show’s characters) lures the audience’s imaginations and relaxing drum beats. As the red-robed and white-haired men make their way through the audience welcoming anticipation of the experience that is to come, an aerial artist delicately twirls from the center of the theater’s ceiling demanding the audience’s gaze upwards and signaling the beginning of the whimsical adventure that is to ensue.

Matt Goss

mgoss3

Singer Matt Goss is bringing audiences back to the days of vintage Vegas with a swinging band, sexy dancers and a classic casino venue.

The show, at the former Cleopatra's Barge (now dubbed the Gossy Room) at Caesars Palace, features a blend of covers and Goss' original songs. Since the show takes place in a lounge smoking is allowed during the show.

Goss sings familiar tunes like "Superstition" by Stevie Wonder and The Eagles' "Hotel California," which he plays with a unique reggae/ska spin.

Goss' dapper attire, blue eyes and smooth voice have drawn the inevitable comparisons to Frank Sinatra and he pays tribute to the legendary singer and the Rat pack era in his show by crooning songs like "Luck Be a Lady" and "I've Got the World on a String."

While the covers are fun, a large part of the show also includes Goss' original songs.

For those who may not be familiar with Goss and his music, he's an accomplished singer and songwriter. Known by his fans as "The Voice," Goss found fame as the lead singer of the British '80s pop group Bros. With 11 Top 40 singles and three Top 20 albums, Bros was one of the biggest acts in the U.K., selling more than 17 million records worldwide.

In 1992, Goss left the band to pursue a solo career. His debut solo album "The Key" was released in 1995. He has also written hits for other chart-topping artists, including the song "Change Me" for Keri Hilson and Akon. His song "It's the End of the Road" was used as the elimination song on the TV show "So You Think You Can Dance." He released the album "Gossy" in 2009 and the single "Firefly" from the album was remixed by DJ Paul Oakenfold.

Besides great singing, Goss' show also features a nine-piece band including a talented horn section. Goss himself sits down at the piano for a song or two and plays the guitar.

While the women in the audience clearly enjoy watching the handsome singer, there's some eye candy for the guys too. The show, produced by Pussycat Dolls creator Robin Antin, features the Dirty Virgins, a troupe of sexy, scantily-clad dancers who perform on stage and sometimes amongst the audience.

The Gossy Room, also known as Cleopatra's Barge, has a rich history at Caesars Palace (it opened in 1970) and is the perfect spot to enjoy the old Vegas vibe of Goss' show. The room, surrounded by red velvet curtains, was remodeled when Goss opened his show there and features new carpet and furnishings. There are small tables with candles on them and cocktail waitresses in long black gowns bring drinks to guests. There is also a small bar in the back of the room. The Gossy Room is a small venue -- there are only about 175 seats -- but it makes the show feel almost like a private performance to which you were invited. The intimate room also allows Goss to connect with fans as he comes out into the audience on certain numbers.

When the show is over, the party doesn't stop. Goss often sticks around after the show to have a cocktail or two and take photos with fans. The party keeps going in the room with a DJ and dancing well into the wee hours of the morning.

Cirque du Soleil and the Michael Jackson Estate's tribute to the King of Pop is a visually super-charged journey through inspiration and self-discovery. The plot -- four friends' good-versus-evil quest for solidarity and self-belief -- is a backdrop for weighty motifs that touch on civil rights, sexuality and loneliness en route to a message about world unity.

Each of four main characters receive an object from Michael -- the show's narrator and spirit guide -- and develop as individuals as they take on their mentor's qualities. First, Clumsy is given Michael's shoes, and with his newfound balance, performs a double slackline act to "Bad." Next, Shy overcomes her name when she receives Michael’s glasses, and she vanquishes a troupe of warriors in a martial arts display set to "2000 Watts" and "Jam." Then, Smarty Pants, the de facto leader of the four, puts on Michael's hat and is imbued with the artist's legendary gracefulness in "Smile." Finally, Sneaky, the troublemaker, performs a playful manipulation act with the rogue glove to "This Place Hotel" and "Working Day & Night."

Jeffrey Osborne

jeffreyosborne21

Hailing from Providence, Rhode Island, Jeffrey Osborne is man with the quintessential soul voice, the kind of man that gives you goosebumps as standard, he was also the lead singer of the R’n’B and Funk band L.T.D, although since parting ways in the 80s has gone on to receive 5 gold and platinum albums – the smooth power of his approach cannot be underestimated.

The audience was a swaying mass from the start and was as enchanting as watching groups of fish quickly change direction together. My utmost favourite song and ultimate classic On The Wings of Love was spellbinding and the key change nearly made me cease up in a blissful paralytic fit, I really don’t know how he carries his voice so unbelievably well.

It was quite clear from seeing him as well how much he enjoys doing what he does, his chuckle is warm and made me uncontrollably smile, he joked with the crowd, knew when we weren’t singing as loud as we could. He creates a warm and friendly atmosphere; buttering everybody up. It would be easy to group Jeffrey into the same category as the like of Lionel Richie and George Benson but he offers something different, a unique charisma and he still hasn’t lost any of it over 30 years on.
