Jethro Tull by Ian Anderson

jtull-ianderson1

Ian Anderson, frontman, flautist and songrwriter for Jethro Tull, appears at the Palms Hotel & Casino to perform his newest album "Homo Erraticus" as well as sets from Jethro Tull's history.

"Homo Erraticus" revisits fictional character Gerald Bostock who inspired "Thick As A Brick" and "Thick As A Brick 2." In "Homo Erraticus" Gerald Bostock has discovered the writings of Ernest T. Parritt (1865 - 1928). The album is inspired by Parritt's fictional manuscript that purports to document key historical moments in British history and its future. The story provides a jumping off point for Ian Anderson's unique progressive rock sound.

In addition to performing "Homo Erraticus" in its entirety, Anderson will also play some of the Jethro Tull band's earlier works. Anderson is best known for his work with Jethro Tull. He was lead vocalist for the band as well as playing flute and acoustic guitar. Anderson also plays a number of other instruments including saxophone, keyboards, harmonica and more.

While Anderson participated in other bands, he gained notoriety in Jethro Tull, which he helped start in 1967. The group's first album, "This Was," was released in 1968. Jethro Tull saw a shake-up in the group's lineup before their next album, "Stand Up" in 1969. "Stand Up" would be Tull's only No. 1 album in the United Kingdom. The album also featured a growth in Jethro Tull's sound, from blues to what would eventually be called progressive rock.  A series of singles earned Jethro Tull audience success including "Living in the Past," "Sweet Dream," "The Witch's Promise," and "Life is a Long Song."

The band's lineup changed again prior to "Aqualung" in 1971. "Aqualung" was the first Jethro Tull album to reach Top 10 on the Billboard charts in the United States and was eventually certified gold. Another lineup change and another gold record came in 1972 with "Thick As A Brick." Brick became the group's first album to hit No. 1 in the U.S.

Over the next four decades Jethro Tull would have a constantly evolving line-up and sound. Anderson is the one constant in Jethro Tull, having been there from the start, but Martin Barre has also been with the group since 1969. Throughout the decades the band has mixed in elements for folk rock, electronic rock, hard rock, world music and more into their sound.

Other noted records from the group include "Living in the Past," "A Passion Play, "War Child," "Minstrel in the Gallery," "Songs From the Wood," "Heavy  Horses," "Stormwatch," "Broadsword and the Beast," "Rock Island," "Benefit," "Crest Of A Knave" and more.

In 2013 Anderson was award the Prog God Award from the Progressive Music Awards. Two albums "Thick As A Brick 2," released in 2012, and "Homo Erraticus" were billed as Anderson solo albums and not Jethro Tull albums. Performing as part of Anderson's band at this concert will be Jethro Tull members David Goodier and John O'Hara, as well as guitarist Florian Opahle, drummer Scott Hammond, and singer Ryan O'Donnell.

A Mob Story

mob2

Just like any great superhero, every city has an origin story. And, with all due respect to all the other cities in the world, Vegas has the most unique. And that’s what A Mob Story is here to prove with its tales of organized crime in Las Vegas.

Let’s get this out of the way, A Mob Story is a musical. But before you go runnin’ off to snitch to the fuzz, you can fuh-get-about-it being your traditional musical. Thanks to ridiculously talented singers, dancers and actors, the real-life story of the last Godfather, Michael Franzese comes alive. Dubbed “The Prince of the Mafia” by Tom Brokaw, Franzese spills the beans on all things wiseguys, gangsters, hitmen and rats involved in the creation of Sin City. So basically, if you miss this, you might end up sleepin’ with the fishes. Metaphorically speaking, that is.

So listen to us very carefully, the best way to do things around here is to get your tickets and see the show, capisce?

David Goldrake Imaginarium

imaginarium1

There’s more than one substance that can take you on a magical journey. For those who’ve grown out of that phase in their lives, David Goldrake’s - Imaginarium will give you all of the effects of those recreational activities without the risk of jail time.

Representing a new generation of Illusionists, Goldrake’s interactive show takes classic tricks and mixes them together in his wizard’s cauldron, casting you into a dreamlike fantasy – this cauldron may or may not be real, but it sounded cool. Now, we understand you might be skeptical (we were too at first), but now we’re full on believers. We’ve even contemplated starting a fan club. There’s no abracadabra or alakazam for this one, just mentalism, escapology and grand illusions.

And if you’re the type of person who needs his list of fancy schmancy awards, we’ve got those ready too. He’s won the Mandrak d’Or Award (which is basically the Oscars of the magic bizz), The Merlin Award, and  was named the Best Illusionist in Europe for 2015 by the International Society of Magicians.

Now that we’ve gotten that out of the way, it’s time to go back to the dream world. If you don’t want to join Goldrake and the gang, suit yourself – just know, you’re missing out.

Hitzville

 hitzville21

hitzville22     hitzville23

Hitzville The Show is a nostalgia-filled trip through the Motown hits of yesteryear. Vocalist Jin-Jin Reeves, along with backup singers and the five-piece Hitzville band, fills Planet Hollywood's V Theater with an authentic Motown sound and experience that will have you clapping your hands and dancing in the aisles.

Hitzville is a journey through the times and places that made Motown famous, opening up with The Pips' classic "I Heard it Through the Grapevine," and going through different acts, going from one influential Motown band to the next.

Expect famous songs like "My Guy," "Natural Woman" and "What's Love Got to Do With It," along with a few rarer tracks that will make Motown fans very happy.

Throughout the show, Reeves evokes the sound and character of Motown's most famous divas, going from Diana Ross to Gladys Knight to Tina Turner (and many others) without missing a beat. This comes as no surprise, as Reeves has shared the stage with many of the performers she covers in "Hitzville." Such energy in a tribute show is rare, but really makes "Hitzville" stand out among the rest.

Reeves' backup singers in some of the songs will catch your eye when they come out dressed in red suits when they cover The Temptations, and will continue dazzle each time they come out in colorful attire and appropriate stylings for each new act.

The group incorporates appropriate choreography into their acts, mimicking the original groups in both sound and showmanship. From their matching shoes to their side stepping and sliding across the stage, there are times when you'll truly believe you're in an authentic Motown show in the 1960's. This is further enhanced with Reeves' likeness to the divas she's covering. You're in for a treat when she gets to the Tina Turner segment of the show.

Make no mistake: you will find yourself dancing along and having a great time at Hitzville.

Tommy Wind - Magic, Music, & More

tommy-wind1

Tommy Wind, like many children, was introduced to magic by his grandfather. Unlike other kids, Wind, who is now 24, pursued his magical inspiration to star in his own show on the Las Vegas Strip.

TOMMY WIND - Magic, Music & More! headlines at the self-titled Tommy Wind Theater on the Strip. Wind's show combines his two passion -- magic and music -- into illusions including a levitating guitar, a woman who disappears while playing a harp and a dueling drum sequence. The show also features comedy routines, beautiful dancers and more.

Wind's grandfather makes occasional appearances demonstrating the disappearing handkerchief trick that inspired a 7-year-old Tommy. But he is not the only family member who appears in the show. Wind's father and mother both appear, his dad performing in the dueling drums routine and his mom, a former Broadway dancer, acts has his assistant by handing off props.

Despite his youthful age, Wind has performed in many of his own original shows, combining illusion with music, in New York City and Atlantic City. He has also appeared in TV shows including Criss Angel's "Mindfreak" and NBC's "I Do!" In 2009 Wind received an award for Best Teen Magician from the International Brotherhood of Magicians.

Wind's show features everything from sleight-of-hand tricks to larger disappearance and death-defying acts all combined with humour and music.

An iconic R&B and soul vocal group, The Temptations have been on the music scene for more than 50 years. The Primes and The Distants were early incarnations of the band, before various members came together in Detroit with an offer from Berry Gordy of Motown Records. Beginning their musical life in the early '60s, it was "The Way You Do the Things You Do," a Smokey Robinson written-and-produced song, that turned The Temptations into stars in 1964. An avalanche of hits followed. Through the years, members have changed but always stayed true to the band's smooth-sounding and smooth-stepping tradition. The classic lineup of The Temptations was Otis Williams, Melvin Franklin, Paul Williams, Eddie Kendricks and David Ruffin. Today, Williams is the only surviving original member, but the band still prospers and can be seen regularly on tour in places like Las Vegas. In 2010, the group released their 49th album, "The Temptations: Still Here."

  • Since 2003, Bill Maher has been the host, co-producer and co-writer of HBO's "Real Time with Bill Maher."
  • From 1993 to 2002, Maher hosted the late-night talk show "Politically Incorrect with Bill Maher" -- first for Comedy Central and then ABC.
  • Maher is also a best-selling author. His latest book is 2011's "The New New Rules: A Funny Look at How Everybody But Me Has Their Head Up Their Ass."
  • In 2012, Maher did an hour-long stand-up special called "CrazyStupidPolitics" that aired on Yahoo's video streaming service Yahoo! Screen.
  • Maher made the funny documentary "Religious" with director Larry Charles in 2008. It went on to become the seventh highest-grossing documentary of all time.
  • Born in New York City in 1956, Maher began his career in stand-up in 1979. He still performs at least 50 engagements each year in Las Vegas and around the country.
  • Audience: Maher's stand-up comedy is best suited for adults who enjoy humor about politics (left-leaning, progressive views) and current events.
  • Venue: The Pearl.

Bill Maher has gone from performing on the stand-up comedy stage to hosting his own successful talk show.

Born in New York City and raised in New Jersey, Maher began his comedy career after graduating from Cornell University as an English major. He honed his skills on the New York club scene during the early '80s.

Maher began earning small acting roles in comedies like "D.C. Cab" and he landed a supporting role as a sleazy attorney in the sitcom "Sara" starring Geena Davis.

He was also featured on Comedy Central's "The A-List," HBO's "One Night Stand" and as a special correspondent for "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno."

After his turn in sitcoms and movies, Maher found his perfect forum with the talk show "Politically Incorrect." The show placed Maher at the center of a diverse panel of four guests from the worlds of politics, media, literature and entertainment. Through heated debate mediated by Maher, guests discussed various opinions about the hottest issues of the day.

"Politically Incorrect with Bill Maher" launched in 1993 on Comedy Central, where it won four Cable ACE awards. The show then switched to ABC and was nominated for an Emmy Award for Outstanding Variety, Music or Comedy Series.

Ending its run in July 2002, Maher moved over to HBO in 2003 where he can currently be seen on the late-night talk show "Real Time with Bill Maher."

Maher is also a proficient writer. Since May 2005, he has been a contributing blogger for "The Huffington Post." He has also published several books including 2002's "When You Ride Alone You Ride With Bin Laden: What the Government Should Be Telling Us to Help Fight the War on Terrorism." His most recent book came out in 2011. It's the best-selling "The New New Rules: A Funny Look at How Everybody But Me Has Their Head Up Their Ass."

In addition to his talk show and writing commitments, Maher continues to make appearances on the big and small screens. In 2012 he was in the film "The Campaign" starring Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis as himself. He has also appeared as himself on TV in an episode of "The Family Guy" in 2011 and of "The Good Wife" in 2012.

Donny & Marie

donmarie 5

Standing in the spotlight on a Las Vegas stage is second nature to Donny and Marie Osmond.

The Osmond family has an extensive history with the city. Donny's first gig was at the Sahara hotel opening for Shirley Bassey performing with his brothers at the age of 7.

It was at Caesars Palace during an Osmond show in 1973 that Donny and Marie sang together on stage for the first time, and throughout the '70s, members of the Osmond family played at practically every hotel in Las Vegas, including the Tropicana and the Las Vegas Hilton.

In 2008, the duo opened their production at the Flamingo, aptly titled "Donny & Marie," and haven't looked back. The show is a family-friendly variety show that follows the winning formula of their 1970s TV program, incorporating dancing, humor and all of their hit songs -- both as individuals and as a duo.

The show starts out with Donny & Marie singing a medley of "Get the Party Started," "Dancing in the Streets" and "Knock on Wood," accompanied by a group of talented back up dancers.

They also sing a new song, "Vegas Love," from their latest album -- the first they have recorded together in 30 years.

While they may be best known as a team, both Donny and Marie found significant success as solo artists as well and the show gives them each a chance to highlight their individual achievements.

For Marie's turn in the spotlight, she sings her most well-known song, "Paper Roses," along with some of her other country favorites, accompanied by two guitar players.

She also heats things up with a mash up of "Walk this Way" and "These Boots Were Made for Walking," accompanied by male dancers.

Marie has a strong voice and shows her considerable range by belting out a flawless version of the operatic piece "Pie Jesu."

As everyone knows, it's Donny who was always a little bit rock 'n' roll, and the show switches gears for his solo set.

He appears out of fog on stage in to rock his 1989 comeback hit "Soldier of Love."

Donny, a "Dancing with the Stars" winner, shows off some of his moves and some funky choreography on "Yo Yo" while footage of him and his brothers dancing during the '70s plays on a screen behind the stage.

Even though Donny likes to rock, it was his love ballads that made him an official heartthrob and he doesn't disappoint the longtime fans, singing well-known hits like "Puppy Love," accompanied by footage of him during his teenage years.

"This is the part where all of the women would scream," says Donny in the middle of "Puppy Love," which of course, elicits screams from the female members of the audience. "I've still got it!" he proclaims.

Donny and Marie reunite on stage toward the end of the show, singing some of their classic hits like "Make the World Go Away," "Morning Side of the Mountain" and "Deep Purple."

The intimate 750-seat showroom at the Flamingo is a perfect fit for Donny and Marie, offering a good view from just about any seat and allowing the performers to walk out into the audience and get close to their fans. The classic Vegas-style room features booths and tables and contributes to the feeling of nostalgia the duo evokes with their show.

The Osmonds have both starred on Broadway and they close the show with songs from "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat," "Wicked," "The Sound of Music" and more.

Donny and Marie have been crowd pleasers in Vegas since childhood and judging by the fact that they're still consistently selling out shows, they'll continue to be welcome for a long time.
