Jerry Seinfeld's unique brand of observational humor has made him a huge success as a stand-up comic and as a television star.
Seinfeld jumped into comedy the evening following his college graduation with an amateur try-out at New York's Catch A Rising Star comedy club. He spent the early years of his career performing at a number of local clubs, sometimes for free. His work paid off with an appearance in a 1976 Rodney Dangerfield special on HBO. Then in 1981, Seinfeld's career as a stand-up comic took off after successful performances on the "Tonight Show."
Many comedians dream of landing their own TV series, but few managed to do so with greater success than Seinfeld.
In 1989, he co-created the NBC pilot "The Seinfeld Chronicles," with Larry David. The show turned into a pop culture mainstay as "Seinfeld." The self-proclaimed "show about nothing" premiered in 1989 and the last episode aired in 1998 after nine highly successful years. "TV Guide" ranked the comedy No. 1 on its 2002 list of the "50 Greatest Shows of All Time."
Instead of pursuing a film career after the show ended, Seinfeld returned to stand-up comedy with a sold-out concert tour. While on tour he recorded the comedy special, "I'm Telling You for the Last Time." He also used his experience on tour to create the documentary, "Comedian." The film, which featured both Seinfeld and fellow comedian Orny Adams, documents the process of developing and performing new material at comedy clubs around the world.
Over the years Seinfeld has continued to be featured in the media including special appearances on various TV shows. In 2006, he was a special guest on "Saturday Night Live" when Julia Louis-Dreyfus was hosting. The following year he guest-starred as himself in the "30 Rock" episode "SeinfeldVision."
Seinfeld lent his voice to the DreamWorks animated film, "Bee Movie" for the lead character, Barry B. Benson. He also co-wrote and co-produced the 2008 movie.
In 2009 he and the entire cast of "Seinfeld" appeared for a reunion on the seventh season finale for Larry David's HBO series "Curb Your Enthusiasm." That same year he also appeared as the first guest on "The Jay Leno Show," which premiered in 2009.
In 2012, Seinfeld launched the web series, "Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee," featuring such comedians as Ricky Gervais, Alec Baldwin, Sarah Silverman and David Letterman.
In addition to his comedy career Seinfeld is also as best-selling author. His book, "Seinlanguage," released in 1993, became a No. 1 New York Times bestseller.
While no stranger to the small screen, Seinfeld continues to tour as a stand-up comic. His hilarious observations on everything from relationships to common social situations continue to be a hit with fans across the country.
